The Launch of Child wellbeing Women Powered

 A Purpose-Driven Philanthropic Journey

When you participate in the Child Wellbeing Women Powered initiative, you join with like-minded philanthropists to embark on a philanthropic journey to engage in learning, personal growth, networking, and meaningful community impact. Our inaugural project will support the Our Safe Space campaign to decrease femicide and improve outcomes for victims of intimate partner violence. The Safe Centre of Peel expansion to Mississauga ensures survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) have access to the critical support they need.

Modelled on the evidence-based Family Justice Centers (FJC) in the U.S. developed by the Alliance of Hope International, the Safe Centre of Peel is a highly effective approach to decreasing the incidence of femicide and dramatically improving survivor defined life outcomes. According to Casey Gwinn and Gwen Strack in their book Dream big: A simple, complicated idea to stop family violence, “The FJC framework contributed to a 90% drop in domestic violence homicides in the City of San Diego, a 75% reduction in domestic violence homicides in Alameda County (CA), and a 51% drop in Brooklyn (NYC).1”

A Crisis in Our Community

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an epidemic. Nationally, 60-80% of children in abusive households witness the violence. In the Region of Peel, the statistics are even more alarming:

  • In 2023, Peel police responded to over 16,000 incidents of family and intimate partner violence, an average of 44 calls every day.
  • Intimate partner violence accounts for one-third of all reports to Peel Children’s Aid Society, underscoring the urgent need to support the Safe Centre of Peel.
  • This crisis affects not only individuals but entire communities. Without access to comprehensive support, the cycle of violence perpetuates, leaving victims trapped and vulnerable.

Collaboration is Key: Safe Centre of Peel Provides Lifesaving Support

The Safe Centre of Peel is uniquely positioned to break this cycle by providing a dedicated and inclusive space where 24 partner agencies collaborate under one roof. Our integrated service model ensures:

  1. No Financial Barriers: Every service is free, ensuring accessibility for all survivors.
  2. One Intake Process: Survivors tell their story once, reducing re-traumatization.
  3. Childminding & Transportation Support: Parents seek help without the added stress of worrying about their children, and children are protected from additional trauma.
  4. Survivor-Centered Programs: Services are shaped by those who have lived through IPV, ensuring they truly meet survivors’ needs.
  5. Culturally Responsive Support: Multilingual and culturally sensitive services reflect the diversity of our community.
